My name is Melissa Vu, mother of 2 kids, 3 hens, and 2 cats. This blog was started to document my adventures as an urban chicken owner in Portland, Oregon, but I’m also absolutely obsessed with all things fiber arts, so it has become a seesaw ride with chickens on one side, and knitting/spinning/crochet, etc. on the other.

  1. Hi Melissa,
This is Marie, Alani’s mom. Just discovered your blog. So great to see Mae and all your knitting and spinning projects!

  2. I am just dying to know how you made the trombone. My daughter is a music major and would love one of these for Christmas. Any chance you would share the pattern?

    • Sure! Here are my notes… hopefully there are no errors. If so, you can let me know before I make it an official pattern.

knit with gold colored yarn on appropriately sized needles, using double points or magic loop method.

CO 12 st, join in round
      k 2 rounds
round 3: [k1, k2tog]* repeat to end of round (8 st)
      round 4: k
round 5: [k1, k2tog]* repeat to end of round (6 st)
      round 6: k
round 7: [k1, k2tog]* repeat to end of round (4 st)
      knit in i-cord 52 rounds
round 59: switch to grey yarn: [k1, kfb]* repeat to end of round (6 st)
      round 60: knit
      BO, weave in ends

      longer handle:
CO 2, knit i-cord 6 rows, break yarn about 12″ and use tapestry needle to pull yarn through stitches

      shorter handle (make 2):
CO 2, knit i-cord 4 rows, break yarn about 12″ and use tapestry needle to pull yarn through stitches

      make up:
insert a pipe cleaner and bend it to shape
      sew handles into place
